Line Reference provides a comprehensive mapping solution for U.S. electric power transmission lines and substation data.

Mapping Service for Utility Infrastructure

The Line Reference map application displays U.S. electric power transmission lines and substations in a user-friendly format. View power line and substation geographic locations as well as ownership and voltage attributes. Data can be filtered by utility and line voltage giving you the ability to customize your analysis needs. Learn more about our web-based application here.

Electric Power Transmission Lines in the U.S.

Electric power transmission lines in the United States serve as the backbone of the national electricity grid, moving high-voltage electricity from power generation facilities to substations closer to residential, commercial, and industrial centers. The U.S. has one of the most extensive transmission networks in the world, with approximately 160,000 miles of high-voltage lines crisscrossing the country. Independent System Operators (ISOs) and Regional Transmission Organizations (RTOs) manage portions of the transmission grid, coordinating electricity flow across state lines, and integrating new sources such as renewables into the grid. Discover more in the Learn section found here.

Web-Based Mapping Solution

Use the Line Reference map application to analyze U.S. electric power transmission lines, substation, and node information. Being web based there is no special GIS software expertise or bulky downloads required, making it the choice for energy developers. Try out our application here.

Filter and Customize

Electric infrastructure information can be filtered by state, utility owner, and voltage providing users the ability to focus on specific opportunities. Wetland and Flood layers are also available to aid in your siting analysis. Quick site assessments are achieved using the polygon and line measurement tools. Learn how in our tutorial.

Robust Data Updated Regularly

Our team of experts has compiled a proprietary catalog of power infrastructure details not fully available in the public domain. Data is reviewed regularly and refreshed in real time. With our mapping application you can gain valuable insights with confidence the data is up to date. Review our Plans here.

Our Story

Line Reference was established to enhance access to electric power transmission lines information and grid infrastructure. Our team of experts recognized the frustration caused by the absence of reliable power line mapping solutions that included accurate infrastructure data and essential analysis tools. In response, we developed a web-based application tailored for energy developers and siting professionals. Our commitment to delivering precise information in a user-friendly format distinguishes Line Reference from other solutions in the market.
